Global Relief Efforts in the Pacific

Regions in Asia and the Pacific have been shattered recently by natural disasters: typhoons in the Philippines and Vietnam; earthquakes in Bhutan and the Indonesian island of Sumatra; a tsunami in American Samoa, Western Samoa, and Tonga; and flooding in South India. Today we thought we would provide you with some links to relief efforts by the U.S. and international organizations that are responding to these tragedies:

• United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) "the United Nations is responding with rapid support teams in Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, the Philippines, Samoa and Tonga to support governments helping millions of people hit by a relentless barrage of tropical storms, earthquakes and tsunamis."
• World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for the Western Pacific WHO is sending technical assistance and medical supplies to disaster-stricken countries.
• International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies website provides a diary/blog from an aid worker in Sumatra.
• U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is working with American Samoan Governor Togiola Tulafono to provide relief to this nation. A team of representatives from FEMA, American Red Cross, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services are responding to emergencies throughout the Pacific.
